Bat-O-Lanterns

A few years ago my mom gave me a subscription to Family Fun magazine. Oh, how I love it (it's a great gift idea)! I've made so many things with my kids from the ideas shared in there.

One of my favorite Halloween crafts and decorations is the Bat-O-Lanterns they had featured. I just went on to the Family Fun site and they have a video of how to make these fun little guys!

My daughter and I had a lot of fun making these and kept all the pieces to use again year after year. As you will see in the video she used foam paper stuff but we just used cardstock. Just make adjustments where you need to keep this as frugal and fun a project as can be!

So simple and fun right?! It's not too late to get your home decorated.

Funny Face Pizza!

Making Funny Face Pizza was the highlight of my kids week. They kept saying, "Mom this is so much fun. When can we do it again?!"

If you want to thrill your kids (and have fun yourself) make some of these delicious and easy mini pizzas this week. They'd be perfect to make for your kid's birthday party too.

What you need:
Bagels
English Muffins
Sauce - pizza or pasta
Cheese
Veggies - Here are some ideas
Bell Peppers
Broccoli
Cilantro
Pineapple
Olives
Corn
Carrot slices
Pepperoni
Canadian Bacon

What to do:
Assemble your pizzas. Start with fresh or toasted bagels/english muffins. Top with sauce, cheese and toppings. Bake at 350 for about 7-10 minutes until warm and cheese is melted.

P.S. If you're thinking that your kids will never eat veggies on their pizza you may be surprised. My kids would normally be picking stuff off but they didn't this time! They ate everything. Give it a try!

Family Fun - Bowling!

Want something fun for the whole family to do this weekend (or anytime)? Go bowling!

Heading to the bowling alley as a kid was a special treat. We went about twice a year as a family and had so much fun. My kids love to bowl too. Everything from the shoes, the colorful balls and cheering for everyone has them excited. The look on their faces when they hit a pin is priceless!

Most bowling alleys have bumpers and ball ramps to make bowling a great experience for kids.

Want to mix things up from traditional bowling? Here are a few ideas.

* Every time someone gets a gutter ball they have to roll up their pant leg.
* Bring a bowl of M&M's and each color will represent a different way to bowl. Pick one with your eyes closed before it's your turn.
For example:
Red- Bowl granny style between your legs
Blue- Bowl with your opposite hand
Green- Bowl backwards
Yellow- Lay down and bowl on your stomach
* Dress up and head to the lanes. This was a fun one to do with my friends in high school. Dressing always make things more fun!

Any more bowling ideas out there? Please share!

Dipped Oreos

If you are ever in need of a very quick and easy treat to take to a friend, a meeting, or for dessert I've got it for you - Dipped Oreos.

Grab some Oreos (any kind you like), chocolate chips, vanilla bark (whatever you want really) and some sprinkles. Slowly melt you desired chocolate in the microwave in 1 min increments or less to avoid burning.

Dip the Oreo half way, cover in sprinkles, and lay on wax paper too harden.

In a hurry? Stick them in the fridge or freezer for a faster set.

Give it a cute presentation stick them in a cellophane bag and tie it off with a ribbon!

Shaving Cream Art

Grab a can of cheap shaving cream (think $ store), food coloring, plain paper and few cute kids to make some art!

You'll quickly be able to tell that my kids love this activity and the messier the merrier!

Here's what you do:

* Spray out some shaving cream and spread it out.
* Add a few drops of food coloring.
* Spread it around with your hands to make swirls, draw pictures, letters and to just get messy.
* Lay a piece of plain paper on top of your shaving cream creation and lightly press the top of the paper.
* Slowly peel back the paper to see your beautiful masterpiece!

So simple, yet so fun!  Plus, your kids will have the softest and best smelling hands around!

WARNING! If you use gel food coloring your kids hands might be dyed blue for a few hours. But you probably already knew that :)

American Girl Cupcakes

Our oldest daughter turned 7 recently and she LOVES the American Girl book series. She and I have been reading them together for over a year and now she can read them on her own (love that)! She reads them every night.

A few weeks before her birthday she was looking around americangirl.com and came across a  quick video of bakers making American Girl cupcakes (I can no longer find the video). She was immediately sold on these cupcakes being served for her birthday.

So the day before her birthday we made some of our own American Girl cupcakes and some resembling each of our family members. We had a lot of fun creating the girls and referencing the books to see what they look like.

If you have a daughter who loves American Girls or just want to make people cupcakes here is what you'll need.

You Need:
Cooked and Cooled Cupcakes
Butter Cream Frosting (recipe below)
Small tubes of writing icing (optional)
Cocoa - for dark skin and brown hair
Food Coloring - gel colors will give you more bold and true colors, like the red hair
Candy (think ahead of who you are creating so you will have appropriate eyes color, hair etc)
       - we used licorice, sixlets (for some of the eyes), piky stix/ cool aid (rosy cheeks) etc. . . .
       - Fruit leather would also work great for the hair
Ribbons or other accessories
Icing bag or plastic sandwich baggies

While you are baking your cupcakes you'll need to make yourself some butter cream frosting. I think store bought might be a little too soft for piping through a bag for hair and homemade is better anyway.

Here is my mom's recipe for butter cream frosting that we've been using forever! It's so good!

Butter Cream Frosting
2 sticks of butter - soft/room temperature
2 lbs powdered sugar
1.5 tsp vanilla or almond extract
1-2 TBS of milk- as needed

Beat the sugar, butter, and vanilla together. Add 1TBS of milk and mix. The texture should be soft, yet hold together well, not runny. Only add more milk if needed.

Color the Frosting
Divide the frosting in separate bowls so you can make different colors. We kept most of it white for the faces, but also made red, yellow and brown. Make brown by adding some cocoa - just add it little by little to get the taste you like.

Frost & Decorate
*To make the frosting smooth for the faces just dip your knife in a cup of water ad smooth it over the already spread frosting.

*To pipe on strands of hair, lips, and glasses we put the frosting in the corner of a baggie and just cut off a tiny tip. Always test how thick the line is by piping it out on paper first.

*Use candies for eyes and hair. We used small ribbon to add embellishments to make the cupcakes look like the American Girls.

* Sprinkle on a tad bit of red pixy stix sugar to make rosy cheeks.

Have fun making, creating and eating your cupcakes!

Free Family Movies

Taking our kids to a movie at the theater happens about a once a year in our family. It can get expensive. So when summer rolls along my kids get very excited about the FREE Summer Film Festival  by Regal.

At 10:00am, every Tuesday and Wednesday, Regal shows a G and PG movie for Free!  It's a great way to get out of the heat. Check their website for the participating theaters in your area.

My Tips:
1. With 4 kids, 7 and younger, I find that meeting up with friends is the best way to tackle the theater experience. That way if one of you has to take out a crying baby you have someone to keep an eye on your other children.
2. Get there early. The theaters are filled on a first come, first serve basis. Depending on your area the theater can fill up fast since there are only 2 movies shown each day.

This week we're going to see 'Horton Hears a Who.' Are you planning to see a movie this week?!
